Tucker Kaas | Kata Geek

I was first introduced to kata in 2019 and subsequently became a founding member of the Kata School Cascade. In 2021, I became a dedicated Kata learner and quickly became a kata coach.

In the years since, I presented at KataCon 8 on the importance of creating a learning environment, attended the kata learn lab at Zingerman’s, hosted 2 Kata School Cascadia Summer Camps, completed the Kata Dojo Masterclass, and lead 4 cohorts through the 2 week kata class.

I really enjoy seeing the light bulb moments happen when introducing people to the kata. I look forward to learning with you during the upcoming course!

Common Questions

  • What struck us about kata back in 2019 is that it is a system for developing problem solvers and creating a learning organization like we have never seen before. Through daily experiments and learning, we get to celebrate the seemingly mundane and small steps towards accomplishing a larger goal.

  • That’s a good question. Kata is a daily habit so why would the course to learn data be anything less?

When we first learned that it was a daily habit, we fought it and tried to do it 1-3 days per week. However, we weren’t seeing the benefits. If you want to pickup a new skill (such as play the guitar) would you practice 1-3 days per week or incorporate it into your daily habits?

  • Each day there is pre-work to be completed ahead of the scheduled session. Each session will start off with a Q & A session with hands on practice to follow.

  • We typically see that half of the group is ready to practice kata when the course is finished and the other half learned some helpful transferable ways of thinking but are not ready to practice quite yet.

We welcome both outcomes because these skills are applicable in our normal ways of working.

  • There are 64 minutes worth of videos to consume prior to starting the course (on top of the 26 minutes of rework before session 1). Click on the sneak peak above to start viewing the prerequisite videos.
